The Best & Worst Human Foods for Dogs

When they give you their best “puppy dog eyes” it’s always tempting to treat them with OUR food.  While there are many human foods safe for dogs, there are some we should keep well away from our treasured pals.

Chocolate & Caffeine ❌ Dogs are unable to metabolize the chemicals theobromine and caffeine, both are found in chocolate.  The chocolate stash is off limits for our fur-iends!

White Rice ✅ Eating bland cooked white rice can help an upset stomach, firm up a dogs’ stool and provide carbohydrates to gently re-energise a poorly dog.

Avocado ❌ Contains a fungicidal toxin called persin which can cause vomiting and is best avoided for dogs.

Pumpkin, Carrot & Broccoli ✅ Are packed with vitamins & fibre, all are great choices for rewarding good dogs.

Dairy Ice Cream ❌ Over-doing it on ice cream can lead to gas, bloating, constipation and vomiting.  Beware of artificial sweeteners sometimes used in ice cream as these are extremely toxic for dogs.

Peanut Butter ✅ Plain, unsalted peanut butter is a healthy treat for dogs.

Grapes & Raisins ❌ Are very toxic for dogs.  If you suspect your dog has eaten grapes or raisins and they are looking unwell don’t delay contacting a veterinarian.

Eggs ✅ High in protein and essential fatty acids, eggs, are a nutritious choice for dogs.

Onions ❌ Raw or cooked onions are one of the most toxic foods for dogs.

Turkey ✅ A Christmas treat that’s safe to share.

Lemon & Lime Peels ❌ The skins of these citrus fruits contain psoralen, a substance that can give dogs a serious stomach upset.

Sea Kelp ✅ A great natural source of iodine, minerals & fibre to support overall health and digestion.

Macadamia Nuts ❌ Even a small serving can be fatal.

Kiwifruit ✅ To boost your pet’s vitamin C, fibre and even help alleviate skin rashes.

Cinnamon ❌ While not toxic, consuming too much food containing cinnamon can cause skin and digestive irritation.

Salmon Is naturally rich in omega-3s to support joints and promote a shiny coat.

Like us, our best pals love treats, but knowing what treats to give is the key to sustaining a happy, healthy, life for our pets.
